* "ALGAE, HOW USEFUL ARE THEY?" *

So, my question is "how useful are algae to us?". To those who aren't familiar with "Algae". They are a diverse group of plant-like eukaryotes that originate from "SUBKINGDOM ALGAE" of "KINGDOM PROTISTA". Now this definition may not be of so much use to you, but basically they are a really big group of "plant-like " organisms.
Here is a little molecular/atomic background:
All matter is made up of atoms, atoms are made up of Electrons, Protons, and Neutrons. The genetic makeup of these atoms change depending on the amount and arrangement of its electrons, protons, and neutrons. Atoms can link together to form molecules.
why does this matter? Well, Algae are autotrophic organisms which means that they produce their own food. A well known way of how autotrophs produce food is by Photosynthesis. This process involes taking carbon dioxide and water molecules to create glucose and oxygen molecules, in a chemical equation it would look like this:
6CO + 6H O => C H O + 6O
I've learned that sunlight in this equation is not used as a chemical component but as energy to force the carbon dioxide and water molecules together. Unfortunately, the process of this chemical reaction takes too long to produce food for the autotrophic organism. This is why they need to use a substance called "Catalyst" to speed up the process of chemical reaction. Different types of catalysts are found in different types of algae. For Blue-Green Algae it is "Blue Phycobilins", for Red Algae it is "Red Phycobilins", but if we are talking about the average catalyst then that would be Chlorophyll. Algae depend on catalysts to speed up these Chemical reactions without catalysts then Algae would have probably been extinct, and why is that a problem? ALGAE Produce about 80% of the earth's oxygen. much more than any plant or tree can produce. So without Algae there would probably be little or even no humans or animals on earth.
Another thing we can talk about is ENERGY. All matter requires energy to do just about anything. Cars, Appliances, Phones, Computers, even we need energy to function. Unfortunately energy sources such as fossil fuels are predicted to run out in about a hundred years.
What can algae do about this? When algae are harvested they can be processed into the raw materials needed to produce fuel or in a more specific sense BIOFUEL. How, you ask? Remember that algae uses sunlight as energy in the process of Photosynthesis? leading producers of "Algae Biofuel/Algal Biofuel" explain that when types of algae convert sunlight into energy, they store this energy in the form of natural oils. Algae could potentially produce more than 60 times more oil per acre than land based plants. This oil when extracted contain the fundamental materials to make fuel. Another thing to note is that algae are one of the fastest growing organisms on earth. It only takes 24 hours for algae to reproduce, and in a few days a new set of algae will be fully grown which is why algae is indeed a renewable energy source. Since algae takes part in the process known as photosynthesis, algae regularly REDUCES and RECYCLES large amounts of the greenhouse gas known as "CARBON DIOXIDE". Which is why algae biofuels/algal biofuels are carbon neutral and very safe for the environment.
